OATES HOUSE
HOLLAND PARK

two-story rear extension

The owners wanted two extra bedrooms, a carport and an enlarged living dining room kitchen. The master bedroom they currently have is too small, and the bathroom hadn’t been constructed properly so it would have to be replaced as well. A rear sewer main easement running across the backyard and set-back limits at the front made it difficult to fit all their needs into a single story.

The decision was made to do less work at the front of the house and concentrate on making a larger two story extension at the back. There is a large fig tree at the back which both lower and upper deck face toward. A small kink in the side allowed us to focus a sitting nook; a modern interpretation of a classic bay window; and the bathtub in the ensuite towards the tree. The master bedroom takes full advantage of the tree top foliage.
