Project Overview

The clients approached Invilla with a clear vision: a family home that captured the timeless, sophisticated charm of traditional Hamptons and New England architecture, perfectly adapted for Brisbane's coastal lifestyle. The primary architectural goal was to design an authentic Hamptons home that responded to the subtropical climate while strategically maximising the expansive width of their luxury riverfront block.

The Design Process: Navigating a 60m Wide Block

Designing an authentic New England-style home in Brisbane requires highly site-specific solutions. The design of Jacaranda House was entirely dictated by its unique landscape. To fully achieve this grand style of facade, the home needed to utilise the full 60-metre width of the block.

Furthermore, the site is home to multiple established Jacaranda trees. Because these trees require immense space and decades to fully grow, they dictated the entire internal layout. We strategically placed windows, doors and high-level glazing to ensure every single room framed a specific vista or tree, blending the built environment with the natural riverfront landscape. To complete the traditional aesthetic, we integrated authentic shingle cladding and tiles sourced directly from America.

Our Approach: Grandeur and Symmetry

From the moment you arrive, the residence feels exceptionally grand yet entirely private. The expansive 57-metre facade uses dormer windows, extended patios, and glazed gable ends to create a perfectly balanced, symmetrical array.

The internal layout was carefully zoned for both grand entertaining and private family life:

  • The Heart of the Home: An open-plan living and formal dining space, anchored by a gourmet kitchen with a breakfast nook, exposed rafter ceilings, and intricate joinery.

  • Subterranean Wellness: A dedicated lower level featuring a gym, sauna, and an external ice bath for health and fitness.

  • Family Quarters: A quad garage, dedicated mudroom, bunk room, and children's wing, with a secluded upstairs office and guest suite.

Key Design Results

  1. Vaulted Ceilings and Light-Filled Voids

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a pitched ceiling adorned with a striking chandelier. These soaring vaulted ceilings create immense architectural volume, transforming the main living spaces into light-filled moments of drama while ensuring the home remains cool and breathable during Brisbane summers.
