Architects in Toowong

Toowong climbs from the river towards Mt Coot-tha, and its steep, leafy streets hold everything from workers cottages to substantial new homes. Invilla has designed four projects here, including Victoria House, Bywong House and the Wool Houses. Design is led by registered architects, with fees fixed and agreed before we start.

Designing on Toowong's hills

Toowong is one of the western suburbs' great mixed neighbourhoods: a proper high street around Toowong Village, train and CityCat connections, the university across the river, and residential streets that climb hard from the flat land near the station up towards Mt Coot-tha. On the upper streets the slope is the whole project. Blocks fall steeply, houses perch and step, and the reward for getting the section right is a home with outlook across the river and the city that flat suburbs simply cannot offer. Our thinking on steep sites is set out in our guide to designs for downward sloping blocks.

The housing stock spans every era, from pre-war timber homes, some under the traditional building character overlay, through post-war housing to contemporary builds. The lower streets closest to the river warrant an early flood overlay check; the hillside streets are well clear of it.

Four Toowong projects

Victoria House and Bywong House are ground-up custom homes designed for Toowong's terrain. The Wool Houses, on Wool Street, are a pair we have documented in a full case study, and a fourth project on Elizabeth Street completes the set. Every one of them earns its floor plan from the slope it stands on.

Working with Invilla in the western suburbs

Toowong sits at the heart of our western suburbs work, alongside renovations and new homes in neighbouring Auchenflower, including Clare House, winner of a BIGSEE Architecture Award. Projects start with a site walk and a fixed-price fee proposal, and the same architect carries the design from first sketch to construction documentation.
